Chile is a partner of the USA and China, and both have been fundamental to our country's economic development. Both have signed free trade agreements (FTAs) and both have investments and interests in Chile. The problem: both are competing to lead the world and be the main player in a new world order. Some analysts and former foreign ministers argue that Chile should not be part of this conflict and that remaining neutral would mean protecting our interests. But that position seems useless and outdated in a confrontation that involves and affects the entire world. FTAs, agreements, treaties, and international organizations—this entire system is weakened and transforming, so Chile must know how to navigate these times of change and define its interests and priorities. Remaining on the sidelines is useless. It will only lead to being swept along by the decisions and interests of both powers. What should we do? How should we articulate our interests? Is the tariff war just a matter of percentages, or is it rather part of this broader conflict that we must understand in order not to lose? Appealing to multilateralism and agreements seems like an outdated response. Knowing our strengths and leveraging them to strengthen our position emerges as a more realistic strategy.
