How do you make more money selling firewood without simply making more firewood? Joe from Ohio Wood Burner stopped by the woodyard, and I took advantage of the opportunity to pick his brain about turning a firewood hobby into a legitimate, professional firewood business. We start with a tour of my operation and compare two very different approaches to sourcing and processing firewood. I primarily use free tree-service logs—including some absolute monsters—while Joe buys cleaner, straighter logs that allow him to process firewood much faster and more efficiently. But the real conversation is about VALUE. Joe explains why firewood sellers may be leaving money on the table by treating firewood as nothing more than a commodity. Separating species, selling properly seasoned wood, producing smaller consistent splits, improving presentation, offering convenient delivery and simply listening to what the customer actually wants can dramatically change what that firewood is worth. We also talk about taking the next step from a firewood side hustle or hobby into a legitimate firewood business—including business registration, vendor licensing, professional invoices, accepting credit cards, insurance and opening the door to commercial customers like restaurants. One of my biggest takeaways? The customer doesn't care what splitter you own or how you made the firewood. They care about the product and service they receive. My pre-stacked IBC basket delivery system is one way I've tried to differentiate my business, but there's still plenty I can improve as my little firewood operation continues to grow.
