On 18 November 2026, a spacecraft launched in 1977 will finally be one light day from Earth. One light day is the distance a radio signal crosses between breakfast and breakfast. Voyager needed 49 years of continuous flight to buy it, and the nearest star is another 1,550 of them away. The reason is not the rocket. It is built into the shape of the thing Voyager is moving through, and here is the uncomfortable part: after 111 years of never failing a single test, nobody can tell you what that thing actually is. Every proposed way around the ceiling turns out to be perfectly legal geometry that needs a substance nobody has ever found. We do not know whether that substance is forbidden or simply absent.
