Inside New York’s Next Supertall Skyscraper Boom

I traveled through New York on a rainy day to investigate the next wave of supertall skyscrapers that could reshape the city’s skyline. Starting with future tower sites on West 57th Street, West 66th Street, and Madison Avenue, I break down how these buildings are really made: through zoning bonuses, air rights, demolition, land assembly, luxury demand, and negotiations between developers and the city. I also look at the larger pipeline, including 350 Park Avenue, 175 Park Avenue, the Port Authority Tower, 2 World Trade Center, Penn 15, The Torch, and 520 Fifth Avenue. The story is more complicated than simple opposition or support. These towers can bring jobs, tax revenue, transit upgrades, and investment, but they can also become “vaults in the sky,” storing enormous private value while making New York feel less accessible from the street below.
