Huenchumilla: “Es difícil que una reforma tan mal hecha pueda ser mejorada entre cuatro paredes”

In an interview with the program "Desde La Redacción" on La Tercera, Senator Francisco Huenchumilla (DC) criticized the constitutional reform on security being promoted by President José Antonio Kast's government as part of its Agenda Against Organized Crime and Terrorism (ACOT). The legislator questioned the way the Executive Branch has carried out its proposal, which, among other things, establishes a new state of emergency under the exclusive authority of the President of the Republic. Unlike those already established in the Constitution, this one extends for a period of 120 days—renewable for another 120 days—and will allow for the interception of communications without a court order, the seizure of assets, and the prohibition of the right to freedom of association. The initiative even strained the ruling coalition, mainly due to concerns from Chile Vamos (UDI, RN, and Evópoli), regarding the potential effects of constitutional changes. This led the Executive Branch to downgrade the reform to a simple urgency procedure.
