Coming up… We have a spectacular show for you. It’s become a lost art. But for those who grew up and came of age in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the album cover was paramount, and today we count down the greatest album covers of the 80s with some stories that are almost too good to be true, including the colorful album cover every 80s kid knows by heart. It may be the most famous album cover of the decade, and everyone thought it was just a random drawing, but over 40 years after it hit #1, a real person was shocked to find out the image was actually a drawing of her! Find out how the mystery was solved next. Plus, the controversial album cover that came from bribing a kid with candy cigarettes, when his mother saw the album in stores she freaked out. Plus a striking image captured on a train track in Thailand—and the famous rock band in the pic were, allegedly, almost killed by a train. And finally, the album cover came from a total screw up we’ve all dealt with in our lives… a printer paper jam that turned into one of the coolest album covers ever! It's all coming up next on POR. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Robert Taylor, Missy D, Stan Summay, MG, David Fritz ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to the Professor of Rock Podcast Apple: https://apple.co/445fVov Spotify: https://spoti.fi/42JpfvU Amazon: https://amzn.to/44b5D6m iHeartRadio: https://bit.ly/444h8MO ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon: http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Merch Store: https://professor-of-rock-merch.creat... Album covers are more than just striking images on a sleeve—they’re visual invitations to a mysterious, musical world. A great cover can capture a moment, hint at the album’s theme, and become an instantly recognizable symbol that fans carry with them. It can set the tone, spark curiosity, and even shape how the music is perceived long after the first listen. The album cover was a window to an exciting artistic experience. Sadly, it’s become a true lost art, but before it becomes antiquated in the music industry, we need to keep the memory alive. We definitely have a lot to cherish and be grateful for from decades of timeless images. The 80s were full of great cover art. So today we’re counting down 8 from the 80s! It’s difficult to narrow it down to 8, so to get in the mood, here are some quick honorable mentions for notable covers that didn’t make the countdown. Journey’s Escape album from ’81. The sci-fi-looking, beetle-shaped spaceship was painted by Stanley Mouse, who, up to that point, was best known for painting Grateful Dead posters. Now, amazingly, even though this is one of the biggest albums of the 80s, Stanley claimed that Columbia Records didn’t pay him royalties for his work, claiming that they simply “forgot” to pay him. Mouse and his partner, Alton Kelley, originally intended the painting to be used for a Jimi Hendrix album, but since it was never used, it was a fresh design for Journey. And what about the Talking Heads' cover for the Remain in Light album in 1980? The red-masked computer faces were actually created by the use of early digital graphic technology, was cutting edge to many, and frightened others. Including me. I had nightmares for weeks after… Then there’s Prince’s Purple Rain cover from 1984- Who doesn’t think of this iconic cover of Prince on his purple motorcycle whenever his name in music is mentioned? The motorcycle that’s actually featured on the cover wasn’t Prince’s It was a rental. The purple smoke on the cover was not planned; actually came from a malfunctioning fog machine that was leaking fuel. And what about the cover for David Bowie’s comeback album, Let’s Dance, in 83? Funny thing is, the boxing gloves David wore on the cover belonged to his photographer. David put them on as a joke, at first, then insisted that they keep them in the shot for the cover. Another memorable one was the generic cover for Phil Collins’s debut solo album Face Value, from 1981. It was just a simple static photograph of Phil’s face, and the label hated it. They didn’t think Phil had what you would call the look of a matinee idol. They thought it was a certain sales killer, yet it became one of the most recognized covers of the decade and one
