The REAL Reason AI Won't Take Your Job

Tech critic Ed Zitron, host of the Better Offline podcast and one of the most cited voices warning that AI is a bubble, argues that the tech CEOs promising mass job disruption are not telling the truth, and that they have a powerful financial incentive to lie. Zitron's core claim is blunt: when CEOs like Microsoft's Satya Nadella say AI will replace workers, they are "talking their book." It benefits them to say AI is so powerful it will transform the workforce, because that narrative drives their stock and sells their software. He predicts they'll later quietly change their tune to "actually, it'll just make workers more powerful" once the technology fails to catch up. The same, he argues, goes for Uber's CEO promising autonomous taxis, of course he'll say that, because it's good for Uber's valuation. He makes a sharp point about who's actually talking. The lawyers and accountants excited about AI are the well-paid partners playing with ChatGPT, not the associates doing the real day-to-day grunt work. Zitron says he isn't hearing from the actual workers that AI is transforming their jobs, and he argues white-collar labor disruption simply isn't showing up in the data. He points to an OpenAI study finding no connection between spending on AI tokens and revenue per employee, and to an Oxford Economics study that claimed AI was costing young people jobs but, when actually read, contained just a single vague line with no real number.
