The 4 Bloods Of Britain Decoded Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:18 Celts 2:52 Normans 5:30 Vikings 8:06 Anglo-Saxons 10:15 Which One Are You? Britain wasn’t built by one people. It was shaped by numerous groups, with 4 key peoples having a dramatic impact and lasting legacy: the Celts, Normans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. But which one are you and how can you tell, from surnames to DNA? Well let’s start with the earliest of the 4 groups, the Celts. These are somewhat of a forgotten part of the British story in many respects, yet their legacy is still massive today. Now by the Iron Age, Britain was occupied by numerous tribal societies speaking languages that we would now place within the Celtic language family. One group was the Iceni, who lived in what we now call eastern England. And this was actually the tribe which Boudica led against the Romans of course. The Brigantes on the other hand dominated much of the north of England, while the Silures and Ordovices lived in Wales. Further north were the Picts. Although debated, it is thought they mainly spoke a Brittonic Celtic language, related to the ancestors of Welsh, Cornish and the now-extinct Cumbric language of northern Britain. Then we had the Gaels of western Scotland and the isles that connected to parts of the north of Ireland. And their Gaelic language and culture eventually spread through the emerging Kingdom of Alba, or Scotland. But another important Celtic world survived between these regions: known as the Hen Ogledd — or the “Old North.” This was a collection of Brittonic kingdoms across what is now southern Scotland and northern England, including Strathclyde and Gododdin. So “Celtic Britain” was never one people, with many different identities within the wider Celtic-speaking world. But how can you tell if you connect to the Celts? Well many common names and surnames link to this world. Now lets jump to the last of the 4 peoples, the Normans. Their defining moment came in 1066 of course, but their story actually began more than a century earlier, with the Vikings. During the early tenth century, Scandinavian settlers established themselves in northern France. And their territory became Normandy, essentially the land of the “Northmen”.
