I was elected Prime Minister of Ukraine when Crimea had already been annexed for seven days. At five in the morning, Russian troops seized the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea. At noon, I headed the government of a warring country. That same day, from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, I said two things: that I would not run for president and that this would be a “kamikaze government.” Both decisions were conscious. Not to run for the elections was to stabilize the country, and not to drag the democratic camp into the fight for a seat. “Kamikaze government” was because I honestly warned: I promise nothing but hard work. We refused Russian gas and won the lawsuit against Gazprom; diversified nuclear fuel; created an anti-corruption infrastructure — NABU, SAPO, NACP — and launched Prozorro; met all the criteria for visa-free travel. For the only time in the history of Independence, the state debt was reduced by four billion dollars. In the midst of the war. We fulfilled our historical mission: we did not let Putin seize and split Ukraine in 2014. We did everything so that the country had its own Armed Forces and could fight in 2022.
