¿Se equivoca Matamala sobre los impuestos? | Cecilia Cifuentes

In this interview, we speak with Cecilia Cifuentes, an economist with a master's degree in Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, director of the Center for Financial Studies at the ESE Business School of the University of the Andes, and an academic specializing in macroeconomics, the labor market, pensions, and fiscal policy. She previously served as a senior economist at Libertad y Desarrollo and an economist at Banco de Chile. She is also the co-author of the book *100 Years of Income Tax in Chile*. We discuss Chile's economic history, the growth experienced during the 1980s and 1990s, and the reasons behind the subsequent economic slowdown. Based on statements by Daniel Matamala, we analyze the debate surrounding the so-called "trickle-down theory," the relationship between taxes and economic development, and the differences between Chile and countries like Sweden, Denmark, France, and Belgium. We also address the diversification of the productive matrix and the cases of Ireland and Estonia as potential models for Chile. During the interview, we also reviewed Congressman Daniel Manouchehri Gatica's statements on tax reduction and the experiences of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Cecilia Cifuentes also analyzed various proposals and statements by Gabriel Boric, including price controls during the pandemic, his views on Sebastián Piñera's wealth, and his commitment to fiscal responsibility. Finally, we discussed some of Chile's main economic challenges: unemployment, productivity, education, free university tuition, investment, and growth. We also addressed the reforms implemented during Michelle Bachelet's second term and Jeannette Jara's stance on tax system reintegration.
