On this day, August 23, in 1906, General José Quintino Bandera Betancourt of the Liberation Army, one of the most remarkable figures in the Cuban Wars of Independence, was killed with four gunshots and seven machete blows. History has not always been fair to his memory, nor has it granted him the place he deserves.
