A boating accident occurred on the Wujie section of the upper reaches of the Zhuoshui River in Nantou County. A 50-year-old firefighter surnamed Wu from the Xinyi branch of the Fire Department was swept away and died by the swift current on August 31st during a rescue operation. The Nantou District Prosecutors Office conducted an autopsy today, confirming the cause of death as an accidental fall into the water, resulting in respiratory failure due to asphyxiation. Mr. Wu had been commended by the Fire Department in 2019 for his meritorious service in search and rescue and had participated in numerous dangerous rescues before his tragic death in the line of duty. His death is deeply moving. The last two men trapped on the sandbar were rescued by helicopter this morning (August 2nd).
