Vorkuta was one of the richest northern cities in the USSR. Today, people are leaving, mines, schools, hospitals, and shops are closing, and apartments are sometimes easier to give away than to sell. But Vorkuta's history began long before the mining boom. The city grew out of Vorkutlag: millions of prisoners passed through the camps here. Now, monuments to those who died in the Gulag are also disappearing.
