Former Venezuelan congressman and governor of Bolívar State, Andrés Velásquez, expressed his disappointment with the phone call between representatives of the Nicolás Maduro regime and US envoys, as the country had been expecting an in-person meeting that was ultimately postponed until next week. "It was a very bad sign, because the entire country had been waiting for this announced meeting for a couple of weeks now," Velásquez stated in an interview. He also noted that the Venezuelan population experienced "enormous disappointment" upon learning that there was only a virtual call to announce an agenda that he considered "already sufficiently agreed upon." Regarding the "strengthening of democracy," Velásquez was emphatic: "What strengthening of democracy are we going to talk about?" He stressed that Venezuela needs to "establish a set of conditions through a presidential electoral timetable," including the return of political parties to their legitimate authorities, the release of all political prisoners, and the creation of a new National Electoral Council and Supreme Court of Justice. Finally, Velásquez dismissed Nicolás Maduro's calls for reconciliation from prison in New York, where he is being held on narcoterrorism charges: "The man has no moral authority to speak of the country's reconciliation."
