Alessandro Barbero - Gaetano Salvemini

Having graduated in literature from Florence in 1896, he initially focused on medieval history under the guidance of historian Pasquale Villari, proving himself to be one of the finest young historians. After teaching Latin at a middle school in Palermo, he taught History and Geography from 1896 at the Torricelli High School in Faenza and from 1898 at the Pietro Verri Classical High School in Lodi. At just twenty-eight, he was appointed professor of Modern History at the University of Messina. There, in 1908, he lost his wife, five children, and his sister in the catastrophic earthquake, becoming the sole survivor of his entire family; he was 35 years old.
