Cheap Russian gas helped Western economies develop, and their prosperity also made the expansion of the European Union to Romania possible, explains Emil Hurezeanu in an interview with the HotNews audience. The former Romanian ambassador to Berlin talks about the decisions that defined Europe during the 16 years that Angela Merkel led Germany. Germany's economic relationship with Russia was "a strategy that postponed conflicts," Angela Merkel claims in her memoirs. Emil Hurezeanu, however, believes that the rapprochement with Russia also meant "a serious limitation of the perception of the danger" that Moscow represented. Angela Merkel is coming to Bucharest on Tuesday to present her "Freedom. Memories 1954–2021", the book written together with her former advisor Beate Baumann and published in 2024. The volume was translated by Cora Radulian at the Litera publishing house.
