Despite the ceasefire in place since April 8, the standoff between Iran and the United States over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to escalate, particularly with Washington's imposition of a "dual blockade." Despite several mediation attempts, the risks of regional escalation remain high. Meanwhile, the Gulf states have been drawn against their will into a war that has become regional, and recent Iranian attacks against the United Arab Emirates have further heightened tensions. In this context, a profound geopolitical realignment is taking place in the Middle East, marked by shifts in regional alliances and the resurgence of rivalries among the Gulf monarchies. This shift in the geopolitical balance is also occurring against a backdrop of worsening humanitarian crises across the region. In Lebanon, Israeli strikes continue to target civilian areas and destroy infrastructure, causing significant population displacement. In Gaza, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with extremely limited access to aid and a lack of access to healthcare for the civilian population. Furthermore, abuses against Palestinian civilians and the Israeli settlement process continue in the West Bank. Are negotiations about to resume, or is there a new escalation of violence in the Gulf? To what extent is the war in Iran accelerating the reshaping of regional power dynamics in the Middle East? How can we explain the growing divergences between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in their dealings with Iran and the Israeli-American alliance?
