A Heavy Dose of Reality for Smith and Alberta's Oil Industry

A proposed $100-billion U.S. and private-sector investment push in Venezuela could bring more heavy sour crude back onto the global market. That matters directly to Alberta, which produces the same broad class of crude and has spent years gaining market share as competing heavy-oil supplies declined. In this interview, Energi Media's Markham Hislop talks with S&P Global's Kevin Birn about the global heavy crude market after six turbulent months marked by the Iran war, disruption through the Strait of Hormuz, shrinking inventories and Venezuela's attempted comeback. Birn says the basic structure of the heavy crude market has not fundamentally changed. Canada produces roughly 3.5 to 3.6 million barrels per day of heavy sour crude, while global demand for that type of crude is roughly 10 to 12 million barrels per day. Much of that demand is anchored by specialized refineries built to process heavier molecules. The key question is what happens if Venezuela succeeds in lifting production toward 1.5 million barrels per day. Birn says additional heavy supply could widen the discount between heavy and light crude, reducing the relative value of heavy barrels while also giving refiners a stronger incentive to process more of them. The conversation also looks at Canada's oil sands outlook, new pipeline enthusiasm, declining heavy-oil production elsewhere in the world, electrification-driven oil demand changes and why future Canadian growth will depend on economics and competition for investment capital - not political announcements alone.
