Army secretary resigns amid reported tensions with Hegseth during Iran war

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation amid reported friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, marking another leadership shakeup at the Pentagon as the war with Iran enters its seventh month. The White House praised Driscoll following his resignation, calling him "highly effective" and crediting him for his "outstanding leadership." Sources told ABC News, however, that the resignation comes amid growing tensions between Driscoll and Hegseth over personnel decisions at the Pentagon. Hegseth fired the Army's top general without explanation in April and has fired or sidelined at least two dozen other senior officers across the military. "This is going to cause a lot of concern, I think, potentially at the White House, but certainly on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the House Armed Services Committee about who exactly is the civilian leadership," said Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East and former CIA officer. Driscoll's resignation comes as the United States and Iran traded strikes for the first time in weeks. President Donald Trump described Sunday's U.S. attack targeting two Iranian rocket launchers as "very limited." "This is a relatively little war for us," Trump said. "This is not a big war." Trump, however, left open the possibility of further escalation. "That doesn't mean we won't smack 'em," he said. "We'll see what happens." The renewed strikes come as Americans continue to feel the economic effects of the conflict. According to GasBuddy, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen $1.13 since the war began in late February. Trump is scheduled to meet with oil industry executives at the White House on Tuesday.
