Greece's Achilles Shield: The Israeli Air Defence Sealing the Aegean

Greece has approved just over 3 billion euros of Israeli air and missile defence systems, the core of a programme called Achilles' Shield, amounting to a complete replacement of the country's air defence architecture. Athens has relied on Russian-built equipment for decades, acquiring S-300 batteries in the late 1990s and Tor-M1 and Osa-AK systems soon after. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, spare parts and maintenance support for that inventory have become almost impossible to obtain, and cooperation with Moscow has effectively ended. The notable part is the choice of replacement. Rather than buying European or American, a NATO member has gone Israeli, and it is doing so across every engagement band at once. Achilles' Shield is built around three platforms covering distinct bands. At the lower end sits Rafael's SPYDER, with interceptors reaching 15, 20 and 40 kilometres against drones, helicopters, aircraft and short-range ballistic threats, replacing the Soviet-era Osa-AK and Tor-M1. The middle layer is Israel Aerospace Industries' Barak MX, described as the backbone of the network, firing three interceptor variants across roughly 35 to 150 kilometres and taking over from Greece's Cold War-era Hawk batteries. At the top is Rafael's David's Sling, built against tactical ballistic missiles and cruise missiles with reported reach near 300 kilometres, assuming the role currently held by the S-300s. Its Stunner interceptor combines radar and electro-optical seekers, keeping it effective when GPS is jammed. ELTA mobile AESA radars feed the entire network. The interceptors are Israeli, but the layer tying them together is not. Greek industry is contracted for at least 25 percent of the programme and will build the command and control system linking the new batteries to Patriot, remaining Hawk units, upgraded F-16 Vipers, incoming F-35s and Belharra-class frigates through Link 16. Reporting also indicates source code transfer as part of the deal, which would give Athens genuine operational independence rather than dependence on a foreign vendor for every software change. Deployment follows Greek geography: SPYDER across the Aegean islands as far as Crete, Barak MX over the mainland and larger islands, and David's Sling on the mainland providing deep coverage. Greece's defence minister has said the country will seal the Aegean from the ground, naming Turkey as the greatest threat it faces.
