Demonstrators have set fire to a migrant camp in the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta and demanded the immediate return of the people to Morocco. Television footage showed civilians repeatedly throwing objects into the fire on Benítez beach, where migrants have been camping for weeks. Police separated the demonstrators from the migrants, who had retreated to a jetty. Previously, demonstrators had already tried to stop Red Cross vehicles carrying food and water for the migrants. Several thousand migrants remain stranded in the exclave. At the end of July, up to 80,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta from Morocco during a mass influx, many by swimming. At least 96 of them died, according to official figures. Most of the migrants returned shortly afterward, but several thousand remain in the enclave. The conservative Spanish opposition is demanding that the people be sent back. However, international treaties and Spanish court rulings prohibit collective deportations and require individual assessments. Unaccompanied minors enjoy special protection. This is estimated to involve around 1,500 children and young people. 500 of them, particularly vulnerable, primarily girls, are to be transferred to mainland Spain. Spanish government under intense pressure The left-wing Spanish government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is under intense pressure due to the crisis. The opposition accuses it of failing to act and abandoning the residents of Ceuta. Furthermore, there are conflicting statements from within the government regarding whether there was a warning about the mass influx. While Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized that the CNI, the intelligence agency under her ministry, had warned the authorities a day before the mass influx, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and other government members stressed that there had been no warning of an influx of this magnitude.
