Seasmoke: The Dragon Who Chose a Bastard | House of the Dragon
Seasmoke is the House of the Dragon dragon who waited nine years, then chose the bastard Addam of Hull as his rider — here's the full Fire & Blood story, from the Red Sowing to his death at Tumbleton. Why did Seasmoke choose Addam of Hull when he had refused every rider since Laenor Velaryon died? This is the complete, book-faithful story of the pale silver dragon of the Dragonseed — the loyal beast who outlasted grief and proved that loyalty can outlast even blood. Seasmoke was hatched on Dragonstone for Laenor Velaryon, son of Corlys Velaryon the Sea Snake and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Never one of the great beasts, he was a rapier among warhammers — slender, swift, nimbler than any of his older brothers. When Laenor was murdered at Spicetown in a quarrel some say Prince Daemon Targaryen secretly arranged, Seasmoke did something no other dragon in the histories ever did. He waited. For nine years he flew the empty skies over Driftmark, refusing every rider, until the Dance of the Dragons forced Rhaenyra's Blacks to gamble everything on the Sowing of the Seeds. When Ser Steffon Darklyn, Lord Commander of the Queensguard, tried to claim him, Seasmoke burned him alive. Then a silver-haired boy of fifteen walked out of the ashes and simply lifted his face — and the pale dragon lowered his head. That boy was Addam of Hull, a baseborn son of Driftmark whose true father may have been Laenor himself, or the old Sea Snake. Because the bond runs on Valyrian blood, not Targaryen lineage, Seasmoke accepted him. Rhaenyra legitimized him as Ser Addam Velaryon, heir to Driftmark. At the Battle of the Gullet, Addam and Seasmoke turned the Triarchy fleet to ash beside Jacaerys Velaryon and Vermax — but Jace died, and Addam flew home alone. Then Rhaenyra, her mind broken by the betrayal of the Two Betrayers Hugh Hammer and Ulf White, branded every dragonseed a traitor and ordered Addam arrested. Corlys defied his own queen to save the boy, and went to the black cells for it. Addam did not flee. He gathered four thousand of the forgotten and rode to the Second Battle of Tumbleton to prove the queen wrong. There he met Vermithor the Bronze Fury — three times Seasmoke's size — turning on his ragged army. He dove anyway. Seasmoke tore out Vermithor's throat and killed the greatest dragon on the field, and the two beasts died together in the mud. Addam Velaryon fell beside his dragon. His brother Alyn carried his bones home to Hull and carved a single word above his tomb: LOYAL. This is Seasmoke's death, Addam of Hull's death, and the truth of the dragonseeds — the book vs show story House of the Dragon Season 3 sets in motion.
