Every meter matters: The race to reach Gyirong

After an ice-rock avalanche from a high-mountain glacier triggered a massive mudslide, roads, power and communications were cut at Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. This timeline follows the first six days of the rescue operation: from the first teams advancing through a communications blackout to rescuers entering the core disaster area by land, water and air, while engineers worked meter by meter to reopen G216.
