Starting at 4,250 meters in Gyirong County, I pointed my motorcycle downhill and didn’t look back. In just 90 kilometers the road plunges all the way to 1,800 meters at the Nepal border. What begins as high, barren plateau suddenly transforms into a deep, forested canyon. Alpine meadows give way to dense spruce and fir forests, waterfalls cascade down sheer cliffs, and clouds swirl through the valley like something out of a dream. This is the ancient route that once linked Tibet to Nepal and India — locals call it the Himalayas’ backyard and Tibet’s own little Jiangnan. Follow the bike through hairpin turns, past rebuilt Tibetan villages, and into one of the most dramatic altitude drops you’ll ever ride.
