The Chesapeake Bay was once home to oyster reefs so massive they were actually navigational hazards. At their peak, these oysters could filter the bay's entire 19-trillion-gallon volume in just a week. But after a century of relentless dredging and devastating diseases, the population crashed to less than 2% of its historic level. The reefs were scraped down to bare mud, the underwater grasses died off, and the bay's natural lungs were gone. To save it, scientists proposed a radical and controversial solution: build a new foundation out of solid stone, then plant 2 billion seeded oysters on top of it.
