$10 Beef at Aldi: What Trump’s Import Deal Means for Virginia

A pound of beef at Aldi hitting ten dollars is not a talking point. It is what a lot of Virginia families are staring at in the meat case. President Donald Trump just opened a 90-day window to bring in more imported lean beef at a steep discount. Governor Abigail Spanberger says that choice undercuts Virginia cattle farmers right as they head into fall sales. Uriah Kiser breaks down a Richmond Times-Dispatch Q&A on what Trump’s beef plan could mean for Virginia cattle farmers and grocery prices. Trump announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on more than 661 million pounds of imported beef, which he said would be sold at a 25 percent discount. The administration also reported cattle crossings from Mexico resuming after they had been closed since May 2025 because of screwworm parasites in Mexican herds. Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Executive Director Brandon Reeves said the immediate concern is lower cattle prices, and the longer-term concern is less incentive to rebuild U.S. herds. Reeves also said extra imported beef would not move grocery prices more than a little. That is the split. Shoppers want relief. Virginia producers are staring at drought, higher operating costs, and a fall window to sell cattle to feedlots. Trump says the plan cuts prices for consumers while American herds grow. Spanberger called it a cynical choice aimed at grocery prices before the November elections and said her administration is expanding the Virginia Verified program for beef produced entirely in the state, plus additional hay help for drought-damaged farms. Delegate Michael Webert of Fauquier sponsored the verification law so consumers can see where their meat was bred, born, raised, and processed. The politics write themselves. Prices at the store have been brutal. Cattle country does not want discounted foreign product landing just as herds are trying to recover.
