President Prabowo Subianto has asked his staff to discuss adjusting recruitment requirements for indigenous Dayak people who wish to become TNI soldiers. The discussion took place as the government faced a number of disasters, including forest and land fires (karhutla) in Kalimantan and Sumatra. Prabowo discussed the issue with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, the chiefs of staff, and several ministers at his residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Saturday (August 29, 2026). During the meeting, Prabowo asked his staff to explain the progress regarding the adjusted requirements for indigenous Dayak people who wish to become TNI soldiers. Sjafrie also briefly explained the contents of the discussion and Prabowo's instructions in the closed-door meeting, after attending a meeting with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Monday (August 31, 2026). According to Sjafrie, indigenous Dayak people will receive special privileges or opportunities to join the TNI. One of the adjustments mentioned is for candidates with short stature. "Oh yes, the Dayak people of the interior have been asked for opportunities to join the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and those who are short-lived are given a few privileges," Sjafrie said on Monday. However, Sjafrie declined to comment further on his meeting with Prabowo and other TNI officials in Hambalang. "Nothing. I can't answer that because it was a closed meeting," Sjafrie said. When asked if Prabowo gave any special instructions during the meeting, Sjafrie also gave a brief response. "Nothing, the instructions were to increase vigilance," he said. Meanwhile, Indonesian Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General Maruli Simanjuntak, provided an explanation regarding an issue related to indigenous communities: tattoos due to tradition. According to Maruli, prospective soldiers who have tattoos due to tradition have actually been permitted for a long time, including for the Dayak people, who have a tradition of tattooing. "Yes, it's been allowed for a long time. There's no problem with that. Previously, tattoos were permitted due to tradition, but so far no one has applied. We'll look for more," said Maruli at the Indonesian House of Representatives Building on Monday. Maruli emphasized that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) would be pleased if there were representatives from all regions of Indonesia during the recruitment process. However, Maruli emphasized that not all Dayak people have tattoos. He also didn't know whether there was currently an increase in Dayak interest in enlisting as TNI soldiers. Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dave Laksono, assessed that opening greater opportunities for Dayak people in the interior to become TNI soldiers was a positive step. According to Dave, this policy could expand the Dayak people's opportunities to serve the country.
