The 'Routine' British Cruiser That Killed Germany's Most Successful Commerce Raider

HMS Devonshire versus the German commerce raider Atlantis, 22 November 1941, is one of the Royal Navy's most quietly brilliant victories of World War 2. This is the story of how a "cautious" County-class heavy cruiser hunted down and destroyed Germany's most successful commerce raider of the entire war, and did it without taking a single hit, by refusing to do the brave thing and doing the correct thing instead. For more than six hundred days the raider Atlantis, commanded by Bernhard Rogge, roamed the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans disguised as a harmless merchant ship, sinking or capturing twenty-two Allied vessels. She was the deadliest surface raider Germany ever sent to sea. Just three days before this action, the Australian cruiser Sydney had closed a raider exactly like her, the Kormoran, and was annihilated with all 645 hands. HMS Devonshire, under Captain Robert Oliver, chose the opposite approach: find the enemy first with a spotting aircraft, stay outside the raider's gun and torpedo range, verify the target by signal, and destroy her from ten miles away while a hidden U-boat lurked below. This is naval caution as a weapon, and a masterclass in why the unromantic decision is often the war-winning one.
