US President Donald Trump has announced an agreement with the government of Delcy Rodríguez, whereby Washington will gain majority control over Venezuelan oil fields that hold more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves—enough to practically double US oil reserves. The pact, which Trump has called the "biggest oil deal in world history," also envisions the massive entry of the private sector into Venezuela, with planned investments of around $100 billion, or about €86 billion. The deal has a particularly relevant feature for Washington. According to Trump, US control over these resources will be achieved "at no cost to the American taxpayer," since the development of the fields will fall primarily to private companies.
