Taunton town centre became the scene of two rival protests on Saturday, August 29, as Britain First leader Paul Golding appeared at an anti-illegal immigration rally organised by the Somerset Patriots. The main march moved through the town via Vivary Park, with protesters carrying Union Jack flags and signs including “protect our borders” and “pray for our nation”. A separate counter-demonstration brought together trade unionists, political groups and local MP Gideon Amos, with organisers estimating around 175 to 220 people compared with approximately 50 anti-immigration protesters. Counter-protesters held signs opposing racism and supporting refugees, while dozens of police officers, including mounted officers, were deployed throughout the town centre and a 12-hour dispersal zone was put in place.
