The Untold Story of Prince Mashele
He went to school barefoot, without breakfast, and learned to write his name on the ground beneath a tree. Decades later, Prince Mashele became a political analyst, businessman and public intellectual determined to help change South Africa. In this deeply personal conversation between Rob Hersov and Prince Mashele, Mashele opens up about the extraordinary journey from abject poverty in Agincourt to university, government, political analysis and business. He explains how education, relentless reading and a refusal to give up transformed his life and ultimately changed the fortunes of his family. But this interview goes far beyond his personal story. Mashele discusses the historical figures who shaped his understanding of South Africa, including Cecil John Rhodes, Jan Smuts and Nelson Mandela. He explains why he admires each of them for very different reasons, while openly acknowledging the controversies surrounding their legacies. He also reveals how he taught himself English by reading discarded newspapers, why he deliberately limits his public appearances, what he learned from studying leaders such as Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, and why he believes humility can lead to greatness. Most importantly, Mashele makes a powerful case for hope. Despite South Africa's enormous challenges, he believes the country can still become a great nation potentially a Switzerland or Singapore of Africa if people are prepared to contribute to its future. This is the story behind the political analyst: the poverty, the education, the books, the ambition, the historical perspective and the determination to never stop.
