Waverly Hills Sanatorium had a 525-foot tunnel built into the hillside. It was designed for supplies. It became a conveyor system for the dead. At the peak of Louisville's tuberculosis epidemic, bodies were lowered through it daily so the patients above would never see how many people were dying around them. The internet says 63,000 people died at Waverly Hills. That number is a myth. The real figure, based on surviving death certificates, is closer to 6,000. But the reason most people believe the higher number is the real story. In 1937, the worst flood in Louisville's history destroyed the hospital's early medical records. The names and histories of thousands of patients vanished. When the documentation disappeared, the legends took over. This video traces the full history of Waverly Hills from its founding in 1910 through its closure in 1961, its troubled second life as a geriatric center, and the strange parade of failed plans that followed.
