The dinosaurs did not conquer the Earth. They inherited it — twice — from catastrophes that nearly ended life itself. This documentary tells the whole story, from the ruined world that came before them to the single day it all ended, and what survived afterward. It opens 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian, with the worst event in the history of life. The Great Dying erased roughly ninety percent of marine species and seventy percent of land vertebrates. Siberian volcanoes burned for hundreds of thousands of years. Oceans lost their oxygen. Acid rain fell across continents. What crawled out of that wreckage was not a dinosaur — it was a modest group of reptiles called archosaurs, and for tens of millions of years the dinosaurs among them were nobody. The apex predators of the Triassic were crocodile relatives, six-metre rauisuchians that ruled the river valleys while the first dinosaurs lived in their shadow. Those first dinosaurs were unimpressive. Eoraptor — the name means dawn thief — was about a metre long and probably ate insects. Then, 201 million years ago, a second mass extinction wiped out the competition. The crocodile-line rulers vanished. The dinosaurs didn't. Everything after that is escalation. The Jurassic turned them into giants: Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus and Apatosaurus past twenty-five metres and forty tons, held up by hollow air-filled bones and bird-like lungs, with necks longer than a city bus. Allosaurus rose to hunt them with a hatchet-swing bite. Stegosaurus answered with a spiked tail, and we know it worked — there are Allosaurus bones with puncture wounds that match stegosaur spikes exactly. The Cretaceous pushed further still. Flowering plants spread across the world and herbivores evolved to exploit them, hadrosaurs grinding vegetation with dental batteries of hundreds of teeth, Parasaurolophus calling through a hollow crest built like a resonating chamber. Triceratops carried three horns and a bony frill, and healed skull injuries show they fought each other with them. Ankylosaurus became a walking fortress with a club of fused bone. In the southern continents, Argentinosaurus may have passed thirty metres and seventy tons. And in North America, the tyrannosaur line — which began as feathered predators only a few metres long, like Dilong — produced an animal with a skull over a metre and a half and a bite exceeding 30,000 newtons, built to crush bone rather than slice it. Alongside the tyrants were the feathered kings. Velociraptor was about two metres long and had wing-like feathers on its arms. Microraptor had flight feathers on all four limbs and glided between trees. Archaeopteryx had already appeared 150 million years earlier, teeth and clawed fingers and all. Then, 66 million years ago, an asteroid ten to twelve kilometres wide struck the Yucatán. It released energy equivalent to billions of nuclear weapons, excavated a crater over 150 kilometres across, and triggered earthquakes that may have exceeded magnitude 10. Molten rock rained back through the atmosphere as glass beads, and the heat of their re-entry likely set the world on fire. Within hours the sky darkened. Photosynthesis collapsed. Seventy-five percent of all species on Earth died, and the fossil record shows no gradual decline before it — dinosaurs were thriving right up to the boundary line. But one branch made it through. Small, flexible, able to eat seeds that stayed viable in the dark: birds are dinosaurs, and they never left. Every sparrow in a park is a surviving theropod. The empire fell. The lineage didn't.
