It isn't a national park and it never was, and it's the only protected region of its size in the country with more than a hundred towns and roughly 130,000 year round residents living inside its boundary. The mountains themselves aren't part of the Appalachians either, and the 1894 "Forever Wild" clause written into New York's constitution still governs what can and can't be touched there today.
