As an artist, she elucidated the finer details of plant life with her iconic flower close-ups, alongside her radical panoramas of New York skyscrapers. Unsure whether she could make it as an artist, she was drawn into the American avant-garde art scene. Yet O'Keeffe would forge her own path, holding fast to a single conviction: that her paintings should be judged as art, and nothing else. In 1929, she took the boldest step of her life, leaving New York each summer for the deserts of New Mexico, where among the red mesas and bleached animal bones she found the subjects that would define her, and the freedom to paint them exactly as she saw them. O'Keeffe spent decades absorbing the textures and forms around her, and succeeded so completely in depicting them that her name became inseparable from the landscape and art she made her own.
