For over 2,000 years the Dutch have been fighting a war against the North Sea building dikes, draining lakes, pumping out entire inland seas, and reclaiming ground the ocean had already taken. They lost that war repeatedly. Whole towns vanished overnight. In 1287, a single storm killed tens of thousands and carved a new sea into the map.
