ADHD Procrastination & Task Paralysis: Overcoming the Wall of Awful with Brendan Mahan
Why can ADHD make it so hard to start something, even when you know exactly what you need to do? In this episode, Caroline Maguire talks with ADHD coach, executive function expert, and author Brendan Mahan about his powerful concept, the “Wall of Awful,” the emotional barrier that can build between us and the things we struggle to do. Brendan explains why procrastination, task paralysis, avoidance, and difficulty getting started are often about much more than motivation, discipline, or making a better to-do list. Past failures, guilt, shame, overwhelm, anxiety, rejection, and disappointment can become emotional “bricks” in the wall, while anxiety can act like the mortar holding those bricks together. Caroline and Brendan explore what happens when ADHD turns an ordinary task into an emotional experience and why understanding that emotional component can change the way you approach executive function challenges. They also discuss why the goal isn’t necessarily to make your Wall of Awful disappear. Instead, you can build the skills, resources, awareness, and confidence you need to recognize the wall and find your way through it. In this conversation, you’ll learn: • What the Wall of Awful is and how it develops • Why ADHD procrastination isn’t simply laziness • How anxiety can make task initiation harder • How guilt, shame, overwhelm, and past failures add emotional weight to everyday tasks • Why changing the story you tell yourself can change how you approach a challenge • How skills and resources build confidence and agency • Why your Wall of Awful may feel harder during exhaustion, stress, or major life transitions • How to recognize the emotional and physical signs that a Wall of Awful may be present • Why anger can sometimes activate you but shouldn’t be your only source of motivation • Why hope needs to be backed up with skills and action • Practical ways to “put a door” in the Wall of Awful using music, planning, body doubling, novelty, interest, and other ADHD-friendly strategies Brendan also shares an important reframe for ADHD adults who are used to noticing everything they forgot or got wrong. If you back out of the driveway and suddenly realize you left your wallet inside, did you really forget it? Or did you remember it, just later than you wanted to? That small change in perspective can help interrupt the guilt and shame that keep adding bricks to the Wall of Awful.
