Masayoshi Takeda: "Family members I was eating with yesterday were gone the next day. I couldn't even say goodbye. I couldn't hear their grief." The Public Prosecutors' Review Board ruled that the decision not to indict was unjust, stating that the defendant, Nishima, had been warned by a doctor not to drive before the accident. As a result of a reinvestigation by the prosecution, she was indicted for dangerous driving resulting in death and injury. Nearly five years after the accident, in June 2026, the first trial finally began. Junko Nishima: "I did not have an epileptic seizure at the time of the accident." Nishima pleaded not guilty. Masayoshi Takeda: "The other party hasn't said 'I'm sorry' yet. They clearly and confidently told the judge, 'I'm not at fault.'" And today's (1st) trial. The sentencing requested by the prosecution was— Prosecutor: "We request an 8-year prison sentence." The prosecution pointed out that, based on the doctor's testimony, the defendant was likely suffering from an epileptic seizure at the time of the accident. They stated that, "Despite being informed of the risks by a doctor, he drove the car for selfish reasons, such as picking up or dropping off someone." Five years have passed since Shiori's life was lost.
