Sarawak haze worsens, Serian records hazardous API of 415

Haze conditions in Sarawak have worsened sharply, with five areas now at hazardous Air Pollutant Index levels. Serian leads at 415, followed by Kuching at 405, Samarahan at 369, Sri Aman at 355 and Sarikei at 328. Four other regions, including Sibu and Mukah, are at very unhealthy levels, while Miri, Kapit and Limbang remain in the unhealthy zone. Authorities warn the worsening haze poses serious health risks, especially to children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with respiratory conditions. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed upper respiratory tract infection cases have already risen, climbing from an average of 1,717 a week early this year to 1,752 in recent weeks as air quality deteriorates.
