A successful pilot who became a reference in aviation content production, Lito Sousa is now facing one of the greatest challenges of his life. A struggle that has inspired a movement seeking treatment. Domingo Espetacular had access to an exclusive statement from Lito, made in the hospital where he is hospitalized. Lito began his career as an aircraft mechanic working in hangars. He worked for several Brazilian companies until heading the maintenance sector of one of the largest airlines in the USA. It was during this period that he realized he could use all his technical knowledge to translate aviation for the general public, always highlighting the high level of safety of jets. Lito was diagnosed with a disease with a difficult name: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, also known as CJD. CJD is caused by a modified protein. It was first described in 1920. Imagine the brain as a large airspace. The proteins would be the aircraft, circulating close to each other, all interconnected. For some reason – which science still can't explain – one of these aircraft experiences a malfunction. And gradually, it contaminates nearby planes. Progressively, the previously crowded space becomes empty. In the body, this malfunction affects the nervous system and destroys neurons. "It can start with behavioral changes, memory changes, motor changes, changes in sensitivity, balance, vision, right? What differentiates it from other neurodegenerative diseases is the progression. It's usually a very rapid progression, right? From weeks to months," explains neurologist Alex Baetta. The symptoms resemble other degenerative diseases, but CJD is much more aggressive. The health problems began in July, when Lito was diagnosed with prostate cancer. At the time, he used the internet to talk to friends and followers. In the same video, he even talked about a strange symptom he noticed in his left arm. The signs started to become stronger during a trip to the United States: "We were having dinner, and when we were cutting, his hand started to come up here. When I looked, his hand was up here. Then I lowered his arm and said, 'Lito, did you see that your arm is up there?' He said, 'No,'" says his wife, Mila. After several tests, the diagnosis came, and Lito spoke about the disease: "I am a rare person, so I received a diagnosis for an extremely rare disease, and because of its rarity, it has no treatment." Many patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease lose cognitive function shortly after diagnosis. Lito is an exception. He still has abilities such as attention, perception, language, and memory at practically 100%. Lito is trying to use this condition to persuade a pharmaceutical company to accept him into a scientific study group. According to the Ministry of Health, from 2005 to 2021, 1576 suspected cases of CJD were registered. The majority were in São Paulo. The patients are between 55 and 74 years old.
