They DNA Tested the Dead Sea Scrolls — The Results Changed Biblical History

Scientists really did extract ancient DNA from the Dead Sea Scrolls—and the results are changing what historians understand about these extraordinary biblical manuscripts. But the discovery is more fascinating than the headline suggests: researchers weren't sequencing the words of the Bible themselves. They were analyzing DNA preserved in the animal skins used to make the parchment. In a landmark 2020 study published in Cell, researchers analyzed DNA from around 40 fragments of the more than 2,000-year-old scrolls. By identifying the animals whose skins became parchment, scientists could genetically “fingerprint” fragments and determine which pieces belonged together—and which did not. The results produced a remarkable historical clue. Some fragments traditionally associated with the same manuscript were found to come from different animals, showing that they did not necessarily belong together. Even more significantly, genetic evidence from disputed Jeremiah fragments suggested that some manuscripts were brought to the Qumran caves from elsewhere, rather than being produced exclusively by the community living there. The research also revealed that different versions of biblical texts circulated simultaneously in ancient Judea. This is especially important because modern biblical manuscripts are normally reproduced with standardized wording, while the Dead Sea Scrolls demonstrate that textual variation existed during the Second Temple period. Another surprising discovery involved the parchment itself. Some scrolls were made from sheep, while others used cowhide. Because cattle were difficult to raise around the arid Qumran region, cowhide parchment provides evidence that at least some manuscripts or their materials likely came from elsewhere. So did DNA “rewrite the Bible”? Not exactly. What it changed was our understanding of where the manuscripts came from, how they were assembled, how texts circulated, and how diverse Jewish literary culture was around 2,000 years ago.
