Methuselah: The Star That's Somehow Older Than The Universe
We’re also live on Spotify 🎧 https://open.spotify.com/show/033Dogu... There's a star you can see through binoculars tonight that almost broke modern astrophysics. Not because it exploded or collapsed, but because when astronomers calculated its age, the answer came back older than the universe itself. HD 140283, nicknamed Methuselah, returned an age estimate of roughly 14.5 billion years. But the universe is only 13.8 billion years old. Nothing can predate everything. Nothing can be older than time itself. So either our understanding of the cosmos was wrong, or something was hiding inside the measurements. This is the story of how that paradox emerged, what it revealed about how we measure the ages of stars, and how a decade of painstaking work, sharper distances from the Hubble Space Telescope, revised chemical abundances, updated nuclear physics from a laboratory buried beneath a mountain in Italy, slowly pulled the number back below the age of the universe. What remained was arguably more remarkable than the paradox: a star that formed when the cosmos was barely a billion years old, carrying the chemical fingerprints of the very first generation of stars that ever lived and died. Methuselah is a fossil from cosmic dawn. A piece of the infant universe still burning in our sky. And the story of how we read its age is one of the most extraordinary achievements in modern science.
