Reserve Brigadier General Guy Hazut is one of the most challenging and profound of the senior officers of the last generation. Although he does not claim this, it is reasonable to conclude that, if not only, in the final stage of the climb to the top, command of a regular division and from there to the rank of general, others, not necessarily more deserving than him, were preferred over him. On October 7, he was no longer in permanent service. He enlisted in active service and managed the learning system of the ground forces - rapid production of the combat lessons of units, brigades and divisions, so that battalions and commands would not find themselves repeating a second and third time the payment of their predecessors in blood and mission failure. Hazut took his lessons from the story of the lessons with him and they are saved for the next conversation, which will hopefully be soon. Hazut does not dodge questions about commanders, his personal observation of his career or his expectations of key positions. Among them: Yair Golan, Herzi Halevi, Yaron Finkelman, Shlomi Binder and the commander of the Gaza Division on October 7, Avi Rosenfeld. A regional division commander, a sharp-tongued general, is not a Shin-Gimal: if Rosenfeld - and with him the intelligence officer of the Gaza Division - had acted differently and raised the alarm, the entire blow would have been avoided or absorbed. On the eve of the war, Hazut finished preparing his book "The High-Tech Army and the Cavalry Army," on the state of the IDF in the first quarter of the 21st century. The first period of the war in Gaza verified his diagnoses and warnings. Now, three years later and in light of the additional fronts, he has updated his insights, also for the benefit of the readers of the English edition. Hazut, a member of the paratrooper clan but not a member of one of its major families, does not mince words in his analyses. His reasoned statements are sharp and blunt. It is tempting - but too simplistic - to associate him with opponents of the line that has dominated Israel in recent years, because alongside harsh criticism of personalities and moves, he opposes a future cessation of IDF control over key areas in the West Bank and objects to Ofer Winter's dominance over his counterparts in combat command of regular infantry brigades. In a conversation with Amir Oren in "Afarchesat", Hazut also talks about the social changes in the IDF during his service. When Hazut was Aharon Haliva's deputy in Brigade 35, also of Moroccan origin, Haliva told him, with a slight exaggeration, "Now we are brigade commanders and brigade commanders of paratroopers. 20 years ago, at most we could have been assistant sergeants."
