The peatland fires continue to spread, forcing firefighters and volunteers to struggle to prevent the flames from reaching residents' homes. Footage from Mentawa Baru Hilir Village shows officers pulling hoses and dousing the burned vegetation. Thick smoke blankets the area, disrupting the activities of local residents. The fires have been reported to have approached residential areas several times. Winds have pushed the flames towards residential areas, including the Pendawa, Sudirman, and Mas Sakti areas. Environmental manager Doni Mahendra said the fire had moved closer to residents' homes due to the wind blowing embers into residential areas. One of the biggest challenges in managing peatland fires is that the fire can persist underground. Even if it appears extinguished, embers can re-emerge and cause a recurrence of fires.
