The gameplay is massive, with vehicles, fortified positions, long-range combat, and classes that force each player to fulfill their role. But where it truly shines is in its social aspect. Communication and cooperation work wonderfully, and it's very easy to end up coordinating with complete strangers to pull through a seemingly hopeless situation. Between improvised orders, absurd plans, and matches with 100 people, Vietnam delivers some of the funniest moments I've ever experienced in a shooter. Furthermore, Hell Let Loose's formula is a particularly good fit for the Vietnam War. The jungle, the enormous maps, the vehicles, and the importance of positioning make every advance significant and the classes much more defined than in a conventional shooter. It's not simply about running and shooting: you need infantry, support, reconnaissance, medics, engineers, and people capable of coordinating. When everything goes well, the result is spectacular, although all of this comes with a number of bugs that are quite difficult to ignore, with errors that can break immersion and situations that seem straight out of a beta. And then there's the big problem with Vietnam: asymmetry. On paper, pitting US forces against the NVA should allow for the creation of two armies with completely different styles. In practice, the balance doesn't quite work, and matches have a worrying trend: the NVA almost always ends up winning. The idea is fantastic, but the difference between the two sides isn't well enough implemented. So Hell Let Loose: Vietnam has magnificent gameplay, a brutal scale, and a social component that's among the best in the genre, but it also suffers from significant problems that prevent it from being all it could have been. But it will be, sooner or later.
